Hours ahead of Sonia Gandhi and Narendra Modi's rallies in Bastar in Chhattisgarh, security forces averted a possible landmine explosion on a vital road in the Maoist stronghold.

A joint squad of CRPF and Chhattisgarh Police detected two large Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) weighing 25 kg each and placed in steel cases on the road between Dornapal and Jagargunda near Chintalnar in Sukma district. Sukma is in the restive Dantewada region.

The forces were conducting an area domination exercise.

The bombs have been diffused, a senior official said.

This is the same spot where Maoists in 2010 carried out the deadliest attack on security forces deployed for anti-Maoist operations, killing 76 in a single ambush.

While Congress president Sonia Gandhi will speak in Kondagaon, BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi will address public meetings in Jagdalpur, Kanker and Rajnandgaon on Thursday.

Security forces are on high alert since the Maoist guerrillas have asked voters in the tribal region to boycott of the Assembly elections. The state goes to the polls on November 11 and 19.
